*BARITONE*
Many people refer a male solo in a choral piece as baritone; this is wrong.
Baritone is one of the male vocal ranges/parts. A baritone vocalist can sing the lower pitches in the Tenor range, but not the higher pitches. He can also sing the higher pitches in the Bass range, but not the lower pitches. Simply put, baritone is the range between Tenor and Bass.
A male solo can be written for any of the male voices; Treble, Tenor, Baritone, or Bass. However, a solo becomes a baritone solo if it is specifically written for a/the baritone voice.
So the next time you come across a male solo in a choral piece, don't just call it a baritone, because baritone doesn't mean a male solo.
